In the direction based problems, we should generally determine the direction or distance if a person travels in a path with many lefts or rights and turns in a certain direction.
Basic things which we need to keep in our mind while solving direction based problems include the direction compass.
If we measure the angles between directions, the angle between two successive directions is 90 degrees.
As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the shadow in the mornings will be towards the west and shadows in the evenings will be towards the east.
Note: If the compass is redrawn in some other direction, the order of directions should not change. Direction compass
When there is a turn towards left or right or u-turn, try to assume that you are traveling in that direction and turn accordingly.
Best tool to solve these type of problems is to imagine yourself traveling in some direction and try to make all the possible moves and also pen down the route so that it would be easy for one to trace the location, direction, distance and all others.
Direction and distance reasoning questions and solved problems:
Example 1: One morning Udai and Vishal were talking to each other face to face at a crossing. If Vishal's shadow was exactly to the left of Vishal, which direction was Udai facing?
Morning's shadow generally be west directed,as the shadow is at Vishal's left,Vishal faces north.
As Vishal's opposite direction become Udai faces south.
Example 2:A man looks at his wall clock and finds that the hour's hand is pointing towards East.if the angle between hour's hand and minute's hand is 90 degrees, then in what direction is the minute hand pointing?
solution: Hours hand pointing towards East mean the time 3.
If 3:30 is taken into consideration,Hour's hand does not point towards East.
